Birds
Nothing changes shape more than a bird. Sitting or standing, they offer at least two shapes, flying can offer so many more - wings alone are incredibly versatile as they bend and flex - feathers too are marvels of change. Oystercatchers differ from godwits, gannets, seagulls, and native birds like the Tui and Pukeko. They offer endless opportunities for painting or print.
In the last few years I have been using multiple drypoint plates printed over each other to create large images that relate to New Zealand landscapes and tell a story about the relationships I can see: within our global location, to the land, to history and coming out of our culture. Tribute to E7, Godwit was the first and is about the migration of these wonderful birds each year from New Zealand to Alaska via the Korean and Chinese coastline, then home again in one single flight of over 11,000 kilometers across the Pacific Ocean. E7 was a female godwit who made global history by being tracked through the internet as she flew.
